It is no surprise to me that these people got into the next round. But what surprised me was that some of the entries were so not properly submitted, i.e. lyrics not typed, entries without the list of composers/lyricists/arrangers/vocals, etc....This happened regularly with the Secondary Five entries. Please note that the lack of information contained in your entries will eventually disqualify you from being judged in the category that you failed to enter, e.g. if you didn't have a name for the arranger, then your song will not be judged for the category of music arrangement.
Please prepare for the live performance which was scheduled to be held on the same day with Band Prelims. During the live performance, judges will select the top three to enter the finals. At the same time, the results for Best Music, Best Lyrics and Best Arrangement will be announced. Best Song will only be announced during the finals. May the best prepared team win!

DEBATES
PUBLIC SPEAKING
To all the debaters (English, Malay or Mandarin), I advised all of you to be prepared for the prelims/semi-finals next week. There is no excuse to postpone the competitions further as you had one week to do your research, memorise the speech, and practise with your team mates. If you haven't done anything, I suggest that you start to do so before Monday.
PUBLIC SPEAKING
To all the finalists of the Public Speaking/Syarahan/Mandarin Speech competitions, the finals will be held in the first two weeks of May. The dates will be announced once they are approved by the school. As it has already been postponed, I would expect all of you to have memorised the script as no cue-cards will be allowed during the competitions. You will also be required to report to the Cue Call team, on the day of the competition, before 7.50 am at the school hall. Late comers will not be entertained.
STAGE EVENTS
To all participants/finalists of the stage events, namely singing, dancing, instruments, please be prepared to attend the prelims on Saturdays (in worst scenario). Of course, I will try to fix the dates on week days after school. To all the dance teams, as you have an extra one week to rehearse your routine, I am sure your performance next Friday (tentative) will be a breathe-taking and entertaining one! Fingers crossed.

As we might have a problem getting enough judges, we might have to run the culinary competitions concurrently with the stage events. As such, we could utilise the judges to judge both events. But this also means that there will be interruptions in the midst of the competitions on stage. Let us try to get your seniors back to help judge the culinary competitions.
OTHER EVENTS
Other events such as the Choral Speaking competition, Peraduan Mendeklamasi Sajak, etc...might have to be postponed till the start of 2nd semester in June. I will update you all asap...

I woke up at 7 am yesterday as I was too excited to witness this year's modern dancing prelims. Well, thank god I wasn't disappointed! In fact, I think most of the audience enjoyed the show.
However, as one of the judges, I wasn't enjoying myself entirely although I was trying to because I have to be analytical and critical during the judging process. I cannot be too emotional especially when I saw students whom I know/teach performing. This is not easy. I am sure Richard and Joon Yang would know what I mean.
Overall, although it was a good show, I would also like to share my views with you regarding how we, the adjudicators, judged. Here are some tips for you (although this doesn't represent a unanimous consensus by all the judges).
I was impressed with some of the costumes selected. When I judge the costumes (10%), I would give a 10 if your costumes suit the dance theme, with the correct colour coordination (you have to look at it when the patterns are formed during the dance routines), with some effort and creativity, and with the right accesories. I also look at your shoes, caps/hats, makeup and of course, props. Please don't think that by wearing similar coloured t-shirts, that is good colour matching. I will probably give you a 5 or 6. Black is obviously the favourite colour as it is easily coordinated. I would give a maximum of 8 if the match is pleasing to the eyes. If you wear the school uniforms (with slight changes to the pants), you will get a maximum of 2. Your costumes will also have to be comfortable to wear. If your movement is restricted by the piece of cotton that you are wearing, that to me is bad costumes no matter how beautiful it is. S4 Aristotle's costumes was just nice.
Generally, everyone scored around the same range for Style & Technique (30%), 20-23%. This criterion focuses on the skills of all the dancers, please take note, I said ALL THE DANCERS. If you have one good dancer in your team and the rest are mediocres, you won't get high scores as this is not a solo piece. I was impressed by the S2 boy who did the hip-hop/break dance, wow, that was cool! I think he stole the whole show! To improve on this area, there is no short cut when it comes to dancing/singing/kungfu...as practice makes perfect! If you think you are the weakest (you have to be sincere and brave to admit) in your team, you need to spend more time with the routines...always consult your choreographer or team mates, you will sure get there one day!
Choreography & Routine (30%) emphasise on the creativity of the choreographers. The moves that he/she created must be tailored to the music selected. Are the moves appropriate or not? If there is a strong beat, there must be a strong emphasis on that beat, and so on. Is your choreography interesting to watch? Are there variations in the routines? Are the props properly used? Can you manage the props or not? Are the props always in your way when you are dancing? Are the routines smoothly executed? Do you manage to delibrately create the routines for the dance theme, or are you just a copycat from the youtube? I personally like the ideas of S4 Newton (A), S5 Jenner, S4 Columbus (B) and S4 Aristotle. My advice to S5J and S4C, as there were so many variations in your dance routines, the next thing you need to consider will be to properly manage these routines. For instance, the umbrella was a good idea but was it convenient to hold and are your dancers familiar dealing with the props? They looked a bit clumsy at times. The choreography for Bleeding Love by S5J was very appropriate for the theme and you tried to create a lot of symmetrical routines, but did you notice that they were not really symmetrical most of the time? The key here to remember is that it is always a good idea to explore different choreography, be creative and initiative, but you have to understand the limit of your dancers. I would prefer to watch a clean and simple routine where everyone can manage than a messy and complicated routine which doen't do you justice.
Good Patterns (15%) means that the dancers are able to smoothly change in between transitions, interesting blocking of the stage, no one is blocking anyone during the dance routine, etc. Many of you scored in between 9-11, with two or three scoring higher. If choreography means the ideas of the creator, patterns would mean how the ideas were laid out on stage. How creative the choreographer places his/her dancers on stage would depict the patterns he/she wants to create. A good pattern will definitely help portraying the ideas to the audience, and hence higher scores. A team with a small number of dancers will have a more challenging task to create interesting patterns, e.g. S5 Dickens. However, I like how they started with a diagonal line which allowed them to occupy more space on stage.
When we mention ENERGY, EXPRESSIONS, EMOTIONS, SHARPNESS, etc, we mean Dance Execution (15%). This again depends on how demanding is your choreographer. A choreographer with high expectations would ensure his/her dancers, every single one of them, execute the movements in unison. They will not settle for anything less than that. If you are just dancing, I mean by just doing the dance moves, that is not enough. You first need to understand the theme of the dance and internalise the story behind that you wanted to tell. Are you in character when you are dancing? Are you focused when you are executing the ideas? Did your eyes wonder when you move from one routine to the next? In short, good execution means good showmanship! For me, S5 Jenner, S4 Aristotle, S4 Dickens, S2 Newton (A) were not bad!

The choreographers must be very imaginative and creative to do this. If you are able to accomplish this task, you will be moving to another level in your dance profession. Good luck guys. Overall, it was a thumbs-up performance yesterday!
