Paramount Championship Alumni
Dear supporters of Paramount Championship out there!
It has come to the 7th year since we staged our first Paramount Championship in 2005. Throughout the years, I witnessed the commencement, development, and glorious moments of the competitions, seeing students becoming more and more enthusiastic and passionate about stage performances and other non-performing events, and the growing recognition by the school management towards our brainchild. As I mentioned to many of you before, Sri KDU is perhaps the only one school in the world (you may check with those who are studying abroad if you doubt my statement) that organises such school event at the secondary level providing platforms for students to shine in such a magnitude of competitions ranging from perbahasan to culinary, band to duet acting, modern dancing to calligraphy, solo singing to Chinese chess, choral speaking to photography, short film to essay writing....you name it, we have it!
As a teacher, I am so proud to be a Sri KDUan knowing that our school has such an event designed purposely for the students' interests, emphasising the importance of participating which we see as significant as winning. It's through years of performing on stage which provides practical training for the students to strive for excellence, and it is through constant participation that the skills are polished. As the director of the event, I am very proud to organise the finals for good quality performances by our talented pool of students. It is such a nice feeling to invite outsiders to see for themselves the talents we have at Sri KDU as they also join us in applauding our 'stage fighters', I call them. It is also a very proud moment to see the student Organising Committee 'graduates' every year after they pass on the legacy to their juniors at the grand finals. Paramount Championship is definitely made in Sri KDU for the Sri KDUans.
Today, once again, for the 7th time, we witnessed the semi-finals of the Modern Dance competitions and to my surprise, I was very impressed with the dancers of the Secondary 3. You did make me proud in front of the external judges we invited. These judges also shared the same views as me! Congratulations. This is the real spirit of Sri KDU. We must uphold the reputations of the school and not let others break the beliefs we have in Paramount Championship in specific, and Sri KDU in general.
Many students, good performers, have graduated since 2006 and I am sure they are now studying else where in the world and could be organising events for their colleges/uni. To recognise their effort in setting such a commendable standard in the Paramount Championship throughout the years, and as a gesture of appreciation, may I extend an invitation to all the medalists of this event to join the Paramount Championship alumni. This membership is only extended to winners of the Category B events since 2005. We will start contacting these students from the 2010 batch, slowing covering the 2009, 2008....batches. The role of the PC alumni (different from the Performance Club family) is to provide advisory guidance, practical support and constructive feedback to the current organising committee to improve the events. For example, Shum Mun Yee who won the Culinary Competition last year would become the advisor for the committee handling next year's Culinary Competition to provide them with some insights as to what should be taken care of and what should be focused on to avoid any hiccups during the prelims/finals. This does not only train the committee on what to and not to do, but also make sure that we are organising the event for the benefits of the participants. At the same time, these seniors who are still emotionally attached to the event can come back officially to help and contribute! So, your relationship with Paramount Championship does not just end the day you leave us, in fact, that is just the beginning of a long journey to see how we can bring Paramount Championship to another greater heights! The alumni will also be assisting the organising committee, as advisors, to handle the finals of the event and when needed, they can also initiate charity drives to raise fund for the victims of natural disasters.
Let me have a meeting with those who are interested and how we can proceed with this plan. I am looking forward to the first AGM of the Paramount Championship Alumni (PCA) to elect our office bearers.Labels: alumni, Comments by Zachary Wong Ket Lud

The TOP 25
It is the our culture every year to shortlist the juniors to TOP 25 before the grand finals of Paramount Championship simply because by now, after 2 months of hectic running around the places and interacting with them, the seniors would now have an idea of the people they want to recruit into this big PC family for the 7th time.
It is never an easy task to train the juniors from zero, in the field of events management especially to handle Paramount Championship of such scale, to what we would now call them hero-in-the-making or hero-gonna-be. Indeed, to be part of the Performance Club, we need everyone to be a hero in the area they are specialised in, if we allow it to be called specialisation.
With the conclusion of the finals of the Mandarin Speech, Syarahan and Public Speaking competitions, I began to see the potentials among the juniors and their eagerness to do their best for the sake of upholding the reputation of the club. It is this spirit that bonds everyone together in the end, although this is not the only factor for the building of rapport.
Today, the semi-final for band competition will take place, followed by the Modern Dancing and Culinary tomorrow. I am so excited to work with these rough diamonds whom I believe will soon turn into polished gemstones!

Greatest Moments in Paramount Championship 2010
Ever since the start of this year's Paramount Championship, I must admit that the standard this year has dropped, the organisation has to be improved, the morale of the contestants is by far the worst! Will this be the last Paramount Championship after 7 years? I have no answer to this question yet. If I am no longer working at Sri KDU next year, I will not be responsible to the fate of this event anymore, will I? But what is definite is that there won't be WINNERS NITE this year as I am not confident that the hall will be full this year with the standard of performance this year. Although I am not impressed with the performances this year in general, there were still moments during the prelims that touched me and reminded me that I am doing something good, at least for these group of students. I am happy.
I want to record my appreciation to Tan Ian and his team of actors who have been joining the skit competition since they were in, what, Form 2? I can't really remember. But they have been winning the Gold medal in the event since 2008 and clinching the Champion Class two years in a row. With their last performance in the Skit competition this week, that marks the last time we are going to have the event for Paramount Championship. It was a very emotional moment for me as I witnessed the growth and development of these students as actors/performers, and it was because of that vision in mind that Skit was introduced since 2005. I saw how dedicated his team was to make sure their performance improved from last year. They were not easily settled for anything less than what they have achieved last year. That was the spirit of Paramount Championship I wish everyone will have. With that winning performance by 5E, although I was so reluctant to accept it, but it concluded the event very well. Thank you Edison for your heart, your sweat and tears! Your effort is very much appreciated.
Although Skit is never the most popular event in Paramount Championship, it has always received encouraging support from students from all levels. It is lately that I see a trend where students refused to participate in the event because they thought Tan Ian's team will always be getting the gold medal no matter what, but have they ever thought why Tan Ian's team always emerged as the champion in the competition? Have they ever tried, really tried, to work on the script/direction/acting/etc? Have they ever tried to start practising long before the competition day? Or did they just get together 2 days before the competition to practise the lines and expect to defeat Tan Ian's team? I am very embarrassed to even watch some skits with such poor coordination and direction, and to tell outsiders that we have such an event for our students to take part to groom them in acting!!! I would rather not to have it next year. As much as I hate to cancel the event, I am very sorry for my team who took so much time to prepare for the event but eventually was told that more than half of the entries pulled out. You are such a disgrace!
Modern Dancing is facing the same problem. Students nowadays are scared to compete. They are scared to be defeated. If winning is the only ultimate destiny for every participant, I am sure there will never be competitions in the first place. Who will want to join a competition when we know that we will not win? Who are so certain to tell me that who is going to win in the upcoming English Solo Singing finals? Anything could and would happen in Paramount Championship. The most unexpected things will always happen on PC stage. With 5C's performance in last year's modern dance competition, everyone would think that they shall walk away with the gold medal again this year. No doubt, chances that they would win the gold medal is 99%, but there is always a 1% that they might not. And there are always the silver and bronze medals to be won. With this year's participation, it gives the audience and the external judges the expressions that Sri KDU has no better dancers anymore after Chan Pui Yi, Melissa Campbell, Nicole Chen....Shall we cancel modern dancing next year? Should we just cancel the entire Paramount Championship next year? It's not worth doing it for students with mentality like this....
I saw so many good singers taking part in English Solo Singing this year, but why can't the Malay singers also support the Malay Solo Singing competition, and the Chinese singers support the Mandarin Solo Singing competition? What is wrong with our students? Should we cancel Malay and Mandarin Solo Singing next year too? The intention of giving everyone more chances to participate is apparently not appreciated. Why bother then? Instead of begging for participation, we shall re-study the model of Paramount Championship to re-package it next year, if I am ever going to run it again next year.
I will propose to Mrs Chan to shrink the events from 30 to 15 next year. Removing half of the events contested. Focusing on the more relevant ones and this will save us time and effort. And money too.
